With a large number of labourers moving to cities to earn their livelihood, tea gardens in Darjeeling, Terai and Dooars region are now seeing using artificial knives for plucking tea leaves.
Tea experts said the garden authorities want to the work to be done within seven to eight days, which is usually not possible if done by the traditional method.
For this reason, artificial knives have been put to use. On the other hand, it is being claimed by the labourers that machines are not the right way to collect quality tea leaves, but they are forced to follow orders by the authority.
